KALAVRITA, MEGA SPYLAEO & AGIA LAURA (CY-PTR02)
Duration: Full Day
(Packed lunch)
Adults: €45 / Children:€33
Departing the port of Patras you will enjoy a scenic drive along the coast with
a great view of the famous bridge of Rio
before reaching Diakofto and heading inland towards the mountains of Kalavrita.
11 km before reaching the known Ski
resort lays the Holy Monastery of Mega Spylaeo, located in an impressive
landscape in a natural cave entrance.
Mega Spyleao, built in 362, is considered one of the most historic monasteries
in Greece. The founders were the two
Thessalonian brothers Simon and Theodore who, following a common vision, went to
Achaia and found inside the
cave which is now hosting the monastery the sacred icon of the Virgin painted by
Luke the Evangelist. The museum of
the monastery has a wealth of treasures. The monastery of the Great Cave has
been a beacon of Orthodoxy and
fortress against Turkish invaders. It took a lot of attacks but never conquered.
Destroyed four times by fire, however
the icon remained intact. Continue to the nearby Monastery of Agia Laura,
originally dating back to the 10th century
but burned down several times by the Turks, the Egyptian Army and finally the
Germans during Second World War. It
is famously linked with the Greek War of Independence and Bishop Germanos of
Patras performed a doxology and
administered an oath to the Peloponnesian fighters. The revolutionary flag was
raised by Bishop under the trees just
outside the gate of the monastery. To this day, the vestments of Germanos,
documents, books, icons, sacred vessels,
crosses, etc are preserved in the Monastery's museum. On the hill opposite, a
monument to the heroes of the
Revolution of 1821 looks down upon the monastery. At the village of Kalavrita
you will be able to pay a visit to the
small museum housed in the building which once was the Municipal school of the
village, destroyed by the Germans
in 1943. Before returning to the port of Patras enjoy some free time in the

largest one on the island. A typical Greek
village. It has a tradition of carpet weaving and pottery which dates back many
hundreds of years.
The church of the Archangel Michael dominates the center of the village, with
its fine campanile dating from 1845.

region, which the local people used in
